TUIT Sustainability Committee
Purpose
The TUIT Sustainability Committee is the University’s central governance body responsible for developing, coordinating, and overseeing sustainability initiatives across all areas of the University in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Committee promotes an integrated institutional approach to sustainability by embedding environmental stewardship, social responsibility, economic sustainability, good governance, equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), and human rights into the University’s policies, operations, education, research, and community engagement.
Working under the Office of the Rector, the Committee collaborates closely with academic units, administrative departments, student organizations, and external stakeholders to ensure sustainability principles are incorporated into strategic planning and decision-making at every level of the University.
The Committee supports sustainability by:
- Leading the implementation of the University’s Sustainability Strategy and aligning institutional activities with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Promoting cross-departmental collaboration to integrate sustainability principles into teaching, research, innovation, campus operations, and community engagement.
- Embedding sustainability competencies across academic programs to prepare graduates capable of addressing global environmental, social, technological, and economic challenges.
- Supporting interdisciplinary research and innovation that contributes to sustainable development and addresses national and global priorities.
- Promoting equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) by fostering an inclusive learning and working environment that provides equal opportunities for all students and staff.
- Upholding and promoting human rights, ethical conduct, academic integrity, gender equality, accessibility, and social justice throughout the University.
- Encouraging responsible consumption, efficient resource management, climate action, biodiversity conservation, waste reduction, and sustainable procurement across campus operations.
- Supporting student- and staff-led sustainability initiatives through institutional programs, partnerships, awareness campaigns, and dedicated funding opportunities.
- Building partnerships with government agencies, industry, international organizations, and local communities to advance sustainable development.
Responsibilities
The TUIT Sustainability Committee shall:
- Develop, implement, and oversee the University’s comprehensive sustainability strategy and policies.
- Ensure sustainability principles are embedded across all University governance, planning, policies, and decision-making processes.
- Coordinate the University’s implementation and reporting of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Promote integration of environmental, social, economic, and governance (ESG) principles throughout the institution.
- Advance initiatives related to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), human rights, gender equality, accessibility, health and wellbeing, and social responsibility.
- Establish, monitor, and periodically review sustainability Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and institutional performance.
- Review progress toward national and international sustainability commitments, including participation in global sustainability rankings and assessment frameworks.
- Advise the University Executive Board on emerging sustainability trends, best practices, innovation, and policy development.
- Recommend strategic priorities, investment opportunities, and resource allocation for sustainability initiatives.
- Support the preparation of annual sustainability reports and other institutional reporting requirements.
- Establish working groups or sub-committees to address specific sustainability themes or SDGs where appropriate.
- Receive reports and recommendations from sub-committees and relevant University bodies and coordinate institution-wide sustainability actions.
- Foster collaboration with students, faculty, staff, alumni, government, industry, civil society, and international partners to strengthen sustainability impact.
Governance
The Committee is chaired by a representative appointed by the Rector and operates under the authority of the Office of the Rector.
The Chair is accountable for the decisions of the Committee, including those with financial implications, and works collaboratively with the chairs of other University committees to ensure coordinated governance and effective implementation of sustainability initiatives across the institution.
