Our Carbon Emissions

Muhammad al-Khwarizmi Tashkent University of Information Technologies (TUIT) is committed to supporting Uzbekistan’s transition toward a low-carbon and climate-resilient future. As part of its Sustainability Development Policy and Green Campus Strategy, the University has established a long-term carbon reduction target to progressively decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated from campus operations.

TUIT commits to achieving substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from Scope 1 (direct emissions) and Scope 2 (purchased electricity emissions), with the long-term objective of reaching Net Zero Carbon for Scope 1 & Scope 2 emissions by 2050 or earlier, subject to technological advancement, national regulations, and infrastructure development.

This commitment aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly:

  • SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy
  • SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
  • SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
  • SDG 13 – Climate Action

Scope of Emissions

The University’s carbon reduction target covers the following emission sources.

Scope 1 – Direct Emissions

The University will continuously reduce emissions generated directly from university-owned or controlled sources, including:

  • University vehicle fleet
  • Fuel consumption
  • Emergency generators
  • Heating systems using fossil fuels (where applicable)
  • Refrigerant leakage management

Scope 2 – Indirect Energy Emissions

The University will reduce emissions associated with purchased electricity through:

Campus-wide energy efficiency improvements

LED lighting replacement

Smart energy management

High-efficiency electrical equipment

Renewable energy integration where feasible

Current Initiatives Supporting the Target

TUIT has already implemented multiple initiatives contributing toward its long-term carbon reduction objective.

Energy Efficient Campus

The University has been progressively replacing conventional lighting systems with energy-efficient LED lighting across academic buildings, laboratories, administrative offices, dormitories, and outdoor facilities.



Smart Energy Management

Energy consumption is continuously monitored and optimized through scheduled maintenance, modernization of electrical infrastructure, and replacement of inefficient equipment.

Actions include:

  • Energy-saving equipment
  • Efficient HVAC operation
  • Preventive maintenance
  • Electrical system upgrades

Green Campus Development

The University continues expanding green spaces and landscaping to improve environmental quality while supporting carbon sequestration.

Sustainable Transportation

The University encourages low-carbon mobility by promoting:

These initiatives contribute indirectly to reducing energy use and operational emissions.

Research and Innovation Supporting Carbon Reduction

In addition to operational improvements across the campus, TUIT actively promotes research and innovation that contributes to environmental sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction.

University researchers are developing technologies aimed at reducing emissions, improving environmental quality, and supporting Uzbekistan’s transition toward a greener economy. These research outcomes complement the University’s long-term carbon reduction strategy and demonstrate its commitment to sustainable innovation.

Innovative Device for Reducing Vehicle Emissions

A research team led by Associate Professor Behzod Jumamurodov has developed an innovative emission reduction device designed for both diesel- and gasoline-powered vehicles.

The device is installed in vehicle exhaust systems and is intended to significantly reduce harmful pollutants released into the atmosphere. According to preliminary technical testing, the prototype has demonstrated the potential to reduce harmful exhaust emissions by up to 80%.



The technology has successfully completed its initial technical testing phase, and further work is underway to prepare the invention for practical implementation and wider deployment.

This innovation reflects the University’s contribution to cleaner transportation technologies and supports national and global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.


Contribution to Carbon Reduction Goals

Although the University’s institutional carbon target primarily focuses on Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from campus operations, research projects such as this demonstrate TUIT’s broader commitment to climate action by developing practical technologies that can reduce emissions beyond the University campus.

Carbon Reduction Roadmap 2050

Phase I (2024–2030)

Focus on establishing baseline emissions, annual monitoring, and improving campus energy efficiency through infrastructure modernization.

Phase II (2031–2040)

Accelerate emission reductions by expanding renewable energy adoption, upgrading buildings, reducing fossil fuel dependency, and integrating smart campus technologies.

Target:
50% reduction of Scope 1 & Scope 2 emissions.

Phase III (2041–2050)

Complete the transition toward Net Zero campus operations by maximizing renewable energy use, improving operational efficiency, and offsetting any remaining unavoidable emissions.

Target:
Net Zero Scope 1 & Scope 2 emissions by 2050.

Governance

The implementation of this Carbon Reduction Target is coordinated by the University’s Sustainability and Green Campus initiatives under the supervision of the University Administration.

Progress will be reviewed periodically, and carbon reduction measures will be updated in line with technological developments, national climate policies, and institutional sustainability objectives.

Monitoring and Reporting

The University will:

  • Monitor Scope 1 & Scope 2 emissions annually.
  • Review energy consumption indicators.
  • Evaluate progress toward interim targets.
  • Publish sustainability-related achievements through institutional sustainability reports and official communications.
  • Continuously improve environmental performance based on annual assessments.
