SDG 2 Zero Hunger
No TUIT student should study hungry, and canteen waste at TUIT is turned into animal feed for local farms instead of going to landfill.
At a glance
Research
TUIT’s contribution to food security is digital agriculture. A team led by Dr M. Mirzayeva has developed software for remote management of farm plots, covering soil moisture, irrigation, fertiliser and pest control. Staff of the Department of Energy Supply Systems tested a small watermill generator on an irrigation canal in Yuqori Chirchiq district, producing up to 2 kWh an hour for pumps and households. Through the Erasmus+ project NICOPA, TUIT staff developed courses in precision agriculture with GIS and remote sensing.
Teaching and students
Students who cannot afford regular meals are identified every semester and eat free of charge in the campus canteens. Food packages are given at Ramadan, Navruz and New Year.
Campus
Three kitchens serve Uzbek, European and Korean food at several price levels, all with vegetarian dishes. Since 30 August 2024 the Sustainable Food Policy requires every outlet to offer at least one vegetarian option every day and vegan options on a regular basis, requires every canteen to provide an affordable healthy set meal for students, and asks caterers to buy from local producers wherever possible. Canteen food waste is separated, weighed and taken by a partner for use as animal feed in Oqtosh village, Tashkent region.
Community and partners
TUIT staff work with farmers on digital tools for irrigation and farm management, and student agri-tech projects are shown to the public at the annual “Kelajak texnologiyalari” exhibition.
