Including local biodiversity in planning and development
Evidence for the THE Sustainability Impact Ratings 2027 · Indicator 15.3.3 · Reference period: calendar year 2025
Tashkent University of Information Technologies named after Muhammad al-Khwarizmi includes local biodiversity in its planning and development. Since 30 August 2024 every project must include a biodiversity assessment of the site.
- Scope
- TUIT main campus in Tashkent. Figures cover the main campus; activities of the regional branches (Fergana, Nukus, Samarkand, Nurafshon, and Urgench, which joined Urgench State University in 2025) are mentioned where TUIT took part. Activities described took place at the main campus unless a branch is named.
- Period
- Calendar year 2025 (1 January – 31 December 2025)
- Responsible unit
- Capital construction unit; Department of Housekeeping and Landscaping
The procedure
- The capital construction unit commissions a short biodiversity assessment of the site: trees, green areas, nesting birds, any Red Book species.
- The design avoids healthy trees and habitats where possible; where it cannot, it reduces the impact.
- Remaining losses are compensated, for example by planting new native or climate-adapted trees to replace trees felled.
- The Sustainability Committee considers the assessment before the project is approved.
Projects in 2025
The procedure is set out in the Biodiversity and Land Policy (TUIT-SP-09, paragraphs 8 and 11), approved on 30 August 2024: project documents include an assessment of the biodiversity of the site, and designs first avoid, then minimise and only then compensate for any harm.
