SDG 6 Clean Water and Sanitation

In one of the most water-stressed regions in the world, TUIT measures every cubic metre it uses and applies digital tools to save water.

Research

TUIT researchers have patented an ultrasonic method for measuring water level, a device for measuring the parameters of leaching water in fields and an autonomous wireless sensor for liquid level in wells. A TUIT student developed an intelligent system for detecting pollution in rivers and irrigation canals within the ITU Generation Connect programme, and another built the “Rain Box” rainwater collection system.

Teaching and students

Every bachelor’s student takes the compulsory ecology course, which covers water resources and pollution. Students in energy and electrical engineering study water-powered generation and efficient pumping.

Campus

Water use is metered monthly at each site. Under the Water Management Policy all wastewater goes to municipal treatment, laboratory chemicals are neutralised or collected as hazardous waste, free drinking water is provided in the University’s buildings, new fittings are water-saving and planting favours drought-tolerant species.

Community and partners

TUIT staff and students share water-saving practice with schools and residents and work on digital water accounting for farmers.
