SDG 14 Life Below Water

Uzbekistan is doubly landlocked. For TUIT, life below water means protecting rivers, canals and groundwater from pollution.

Research

TUIT inventions measure water levels in canals and wells and the parameters of water leaching from fields into groundwater. A TUIT student project proposes an intelligent early-warning system for chemical discharges into rivers and irrigation canals.

Teaching and students

The compulsory ecology course covers aquatic ecosystems and pollution prevention, including the lessons of the Aral Sea crisis. The Nukus and Urgench branches are located in the Aral Sea region.

Campus

The Water Management Policy sets discharge standards, periodic testing of discharge quality, spill prevention and a ban on discharging untreated wastewater into open water bodies, canals or the ground. The Policy on Plastics and Single-Use Items reduces the plastic that can reach canals and rivers, and the Sustainable Food Policy allows only legally or sustainably harvested fish on campus.

Community and partners

TUIT is looking for partners to apply its water-monitoring technologies with water users and environmental authorities.
