Good Health and Well-being 2024

Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages

At Tashkent University of Information Technologies (TUIT), we believe that technological innovation plays a vital role in improving public health, mental well-being, and access to medical services. Our commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) is reflected through our educational programs, research initiatives, and community activities that promote a healthy lifestyle and the use of ICT for healthcare improvement.

Digital Health and Research Innovation

TUIT is actively leveraging its expertise in information and communication technologies (ICT) and engineering to support health-care innovation, promote well-being, and enhance medical-technology capabilities in Uzbekistan. Key 2024 initiatives include:

  • Through the ERASMUS+ UzMedEn – New Master’s Degree and Training Course Programs in the Field of Medical Engineering in Uzbekistan (project reference 101082221) TUIT faculty are participating in advanced training courses held abroad. On 30 September 2024, courses commenced at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University in Lithuania, involving 30+ professors from seven Uzbek universities, including at least four from TUIT. The training is tied to the development of new Master’s programmes in Medical Engineering. uz
  • TUIT helped host the Urban.Tech Uzbekistan 2024 Hackathon (part of the “Innoweek-2024” event) where one of the key tracks was “Health Tech – Medical Technologies”. The event provided a platform for student teams to ideate and prototype digital-health and medical-technology solutions within 48 hours. uz+1
  • TUIT launched the International Conference on Information Technology in Medicine as part of the “ERASMUS+ TechReh” project. This brought together academics from Italy, France, Lithuania, doctoral students and students, and focused on advancing ICT applications in medicine. uz

These activities underscore TUIT’s commitment to bridging engineering and medicine, building capacity for biomedical technologies, nurturing student innovation in health-tech, and fostering international cooperation to advance healthcare in Uzbekistan.

Healthy Campus Initiative

TUIT is committed to cultivating a safe, inclusive, and health-conscious campus environment. In 2024, our efforts focused on strengthening physical health, mental well-being and community access to campus resources:

Modern sports & fitness infrastructure: According to the university’s campus overview, TUIT’s athletic facilities include Olympic-sized football grounds, multi-purpose sports courts, a professional running track and indoor training halls equipped with advanced fitness equipment. tuit.uz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DU_PGn9gcMo

Shared community access to sports facilities: TUIT’s sports complexes are open for scheduled use by the local community — including nearby schools, academic lyceums and residents of the Bodomzor neighbourhood — fostering a healthy lifestyle not just for students but the wider public.

  • The smoke-free policy at Tashkent University of Information Technologies named after Muhammad al-Khwarizmi (TUIT) aims to create a healthy environment by prohibiting smoking and the use of tobacco and narcotic substances in all forms. Established in 2010 and reviewed in 2019, this policy ensures that all academic, residential, and recreational areas, including transportation facilities, remain smoke-free. The initiative is crucial in protecting the health of students and staff, as exposure to second-hand smoke can lead to serious health issues, such as asthma, respiratory infections, and heart disease. The responsibility for implementing this policy lies with a dedicated committee consisting of the Rector (Student Affairs) as the chairperson, the Vice Rector as the secretary, Chief Wardens as members, and student representatives. This committee will monitor the campus to maintain a tobacco-free environment. Preventive measures include conducting awareness campaigns, monitoring the use of e-cigarettes, and ensuring that all students and employees agree to the policy upon joining TUIT.Any violations of this policy are treated as breaches of the institution’s code of conduct and will result in strict disciplinary actions. Complaints can be filed by any member of the campus community, and an inquiry committee will investigate reported violations. Visitors found violating the smoke-free policy will be asked to leave campus, and contractors who repeatedly violate the policy may face contract termination (https://tuit.uz/tuits-smoke-free-policy).

Promoting Mental Well-being

TUIT recognises that mental and emotional health are foundational to students’ academic success and personal development. In 2024, we intensified our efforts to create a supportive environment where every student and staff member can thrive mentally and emotionally.

  • Every Friday at the university has been declared a day of psychological and legal counseling for female students, female professors, and staff. https://t.me/tuituz_official/20216
  • On 25 April 2024, TUIT’s Women’s Council organised a sports relay race among faculties, specifically aimed at encouraging female students to engage in physical activity, promote healthy lifestyle habits and enhance their well‑being. tuit.uz

  • These kinds of physical‑activity‑based initiatives are part of our broader approach: we blend mind and body health by offering non‑academic, wellness‑oriented events that provide both stress relief and community‑building opportunities.
  • We also integrate art‑therapy and creative psychological sessions – for example, in student residence halls – to enhance emotional resilience, self‑expression, and detection of early signs of stress or anxiety.
  • Importantly, we make a conscious effort to embed healthy lifestyle awareness (e.g., through sport, wellness events, preventive campaigns) under the umbrella of mental‑well‑being, recognising the close link between physical and mental health.
  • Through these measures, TUIT is creating a campus culture that supports emotional wellness, resilience, and positive peer networks – all aligned with the spirit of SDG 3 Good Health and Well‑being.

Community Engagement

Through outreach activities, TUIT students and staff participate in public health awareness campaigns, digital literacy programs for healthcare professionals, and ICT-based projects that improve access to health information in rural regions.

TUIT contributes to SDG 3 by leveraging technology and education to ensure better health and well-being — on campus, in the community, and across the nation.
