Waste generated and recycled at TUIT, 2025

Evidence for the THE Sustainability Impact Ratings 2027 · Indicator 12.3.1 · Data period: calendar year 2025 (utility records)

Summary

Tashkent University of Information Technologies named after Muhammad al-Khwarizmi records the waste generated on its main campus. Every collection by the municipal waste operator is recorded and billed by volume. In 2025 the operator collected 661.3 m³ of waste, which is about 132 tonnes at a typical density of 0.2 t per m³ for mixed municipal waste. In addition, about 13 tonnes of food waste went to animal feed (see the Food waste data page). Separate collection of paper, plastic and electronic waste was not recorded in tonnes in 2025. Waste generated in 2025 was therefore about 145 tonnes, of which about 13 tonnes (9%) were reused and about 132 tonnes went to landfill.

Estimated composition of mixed waste, 2025

Paper and plastic in the mixed waste were not weighed separately in 2025. They are therefore estimated by applying the published composition of municipal solid waste in the city of Tashkent (Rakhmatullayev et al., 2020) to the 132.3 tonnes of mixed waste collected. These are estimates of waste generated; none of it is counted as recycled.

FractionShare in Tashkent municipal wasteEstimated amount in TUIT mixed waste, 2025

Plastic5.91%about 7.8 t
Glass3.50%about 4.6 t
Metal1.28%about 1.7 t

Source of the composition: F.N. Rakhmatullayev, S.M. Turabjanov, T.V. Ponamaryova, L.S. Rakhimova, U.S. Abdullaev, “Investigation of morphological composition and evaluation of the effectiveness of municipal solid waste recycling methods in Uzbekistan”, Technical Science and Innovation, 2020, no. 2. A university’s waste may contain more paper than household waste, so the paper figure is likely to be a lower bound. In future these fractions are to be weighed and entered in the monthly waste register (TUIT-SP-05, paragraph 6).

Method and responsibility

Collections are recorded by the waste operator and billed monthly by volume; the Department of Housekeeping and Landscaping keeps the figures in its monthly utility summary. Volumes are converted to tonnes with a density of 0.2 t per m³, a typical value for uncompacted mixed municipal waste. Since 30 August 2024 the Waste Management and Recycling Policy (TUIT-SP-05, paragraph 6) requires the amount of waste generated, recycled and sent to landfill to be measured by weight and entered in a monthly waste register.
